The Australian market closed at a three-week low as energy and utilities weighed

The S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) fell 20.1 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 8,766.40, its lowest close since April 7, as traders assessed reports that Iran had proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Energy stocks declined as investors took profits, with Woodside Energy Group Limited (ASX: WDS) down 1.5 per cent to $32.13 and Santos Limited (ASX: STO) falling 1.8 per cent to $7.65.

Atlas Arteria Limited (ASX: ALX) surged after a takeover proposal from IFM Investors Pty Ltd

Utilities were the largest drag after Origin Energy Limited (ASX: ORG) dropped 5 per cent to $12.13 following weaker Australia Pacific LNG Pty Limited revenue and a reduced outlook for Octopus Energy Group Limited. Gold miners supported the market, with Newmont Corporation (ASX: NEM) up 6.8 per cent and Evolution Mining Limited (ASX: EVN) rising 2.5 per cent, while Atlas Arteria Limited (ASX: ALX) jumped 13.4 per cent after IFM Investors Pty Ltd made a $7 billion takeover offer.

(NASDAQ: META), while NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) rose 4 per cent, Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MU) gained 5.6 per cent, Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) added 1 per cent and Apple Inc.
