Sharemarket edges higher ahead of inflation data and Fed decision

The S&P/ASX 200 (INDEXASX: XJO) rose 14.7 points to 8809.9 on Monday. Six of the 11 sectors fell, led by consumer-related stocks, while materials and real estate gained. The index is down more than 4% since its August record high on rate and AI-funding concerns. Inflation data due Wednesday could cement the case for a fifth Reserve Bank of Australia cash rate rise next week, to 4.85%, with money markets pricing a 65% chance at the November 3 meeting.

Miners and energy lift the bourse as banks and staples drag

Miners advanced on hopes of fresh China stimulus, with BHP Group Limited (ASX: BHP) up 1 per cent to $55.6 and Fortescue Ltd (ASX: FMG) up 2.2 per cent to $14.58. Energy stocks gained despite a near 2 per cent fall in Brent crude to $US114 a barrel, as Middle East tensions kept prices near a six-month high: Woodside Energy Group Ltd (ASX: WDS) added 0.7 per cent to $33.09. The big four banks weighed, led by National Australia Bank Limited (ASX: NAB), down 0.8 per cent to $41, while staples fell on profit-taking. In corporate news, Tuas Limited (ASX: TUA) tumbled 31 per cent to $1.26 after its Singapore subsidiary faced a possible fine or licence suspension, and Ingenia Communities Group (ASX: INA) climbed 5 per cent to $5 on a third takeover bid, from Avid Property Group at $5.40 per security. BlueScope Steel Limited (ASX: BSL) rallied 2.9 per cent to $33.31 on raised first-half guidance.

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) declined on weaker revenue. Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL), Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) report third-quarter results later this week.
