Financials and miners drag the ASX off its winning streak

The S&P/ASX 200 slipped 8 points, or -0.1%, to 8727.7 on Wednesday, snapping a three-day winning streak despite record highs on Wall Street. Six of the 11 sectors rose, led by health care and real estate, but heavyweight financials and materials fell hardest. BHP Group Limited (ASX: BHP) eased 0.7% to $62.45 — having sold its Kambalda nickel assets to Gold Fields Limited (NYSE: GFI) — and Fortescue Ltd (ASX: FMG) dropped 2.5% to $16.01, while Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX: CBA) and Westpac Banking Corporation (ASX: WBC) each fell more than 1.2%, to $150.37 and $34.24.

Arena REIT soars as uranium and health care names advance

Arena REIT (ASX: ARF) surged 13% to $2.35 after Goodstart Early Learning flagged plans to buy 31 centres from Edge Early Learning. Uranium names rallied on a US nuclear deal between Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) and Constellation Energy Corporation (NASDAQ: CEG), lifting Boss Energy Limited (ASX: BOE) and Deep Yellow Limited (ASX: DYL) 4.6%, to $1.58 and $1.13. Elsewhere, Dicker Data Limited (ASX: DDR) rose 2% to $15.89 on a $112 million New Zealand acquisition, and Telix Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: TLX) gained 3% to $15.87 as its brain-cancer imaging drug began US sales. SKS Technologies Group Limited (ASX: SKS) sank 12.3% to $9.80 after its executive chairman and director sold 10 million shares.

Wall Street retreats from records as high-yield concerns return

US equities had set fresh records overnight on a tech rally, with NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA), Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) and CrowdStrike Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRWD) all touching all-time highs, but the major indices closed lower on Wednesday as high-yield concerns resurfaced. The S&P 500 (INDEXSP: .INX) and Nasdaq 100 (INDEXNASDAQ: NDX) each slipped 0.2% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDEXDJX: .DJI) shed 341 points. Chipmakers and hyperscalers were mostly weaker — Nvidia down 0.7%, AMD 0.5%, Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META) 2.4% and Oracle Corporation (NYSE: ORCL) 0.8% — while pharmaceutical and staples stocks gained. Oil touched $US102 a barrel before easing.
