Rising yields and oil prices drag the ASX lower

Australian shares fell 0.6% over the week as a higher oil price and fading US Treasury buyback support left investors cautious. The S&P/ASX 200 eased to 9058.9 on Friday, with six of 11 sectors lower, following a nearly 1% Wall Street fall as the US 10-year yield rose to 4.70%. Real estate led losses — Goodman Group (ASX: GMG) down 5.3% and Charter Hall Group (ASX: CHC) off 6.3% — while technology slumped, led by Zip Co Limited (ASX: ZIP), down 15.7%, with WiseTech Global Limited (ASX: WTC), Block, Inc. (ASX: XYZ) and NEXTDC Limited (ASX: NXT) all weaker. Banks were mixed, with Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX: CBA) up 1%, and healthcare’s rally ended as CSL Limited (ASX: CSL) and Telix Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: TLX) fell. BHP Group Limited (ASX: BHP) slipped nearly 1%, but gold miners Regis Resources Limited (ASX: RRL), Genesis Minerals Limited (ASX: GMD) and Vault Minerals Limited (ASX: VAU) rallied.

Takeover bids and earnings updates shape corporate news

EQT Holdings Limited (ASX: EQT) surged 9.3% after BGH Capital lodged a $24.75-a-share takeover bid, and Guzman y Gomez Limited (ASX: GYG) jumped 11.4% despite a $26.7 million loss tied to its abandoned US expansion. Inghams Group Limited (ASX: ING) fell 7.2% on higher cost guidance and Accent Group Limited (ASX: AX1) dropped 8.2% on a $13.8 million full-year loss, while SCX.ai Holdings Limited (ASX: SCX) slid 16.7% to 25¢ on debut. DigiCo Infrastructure REIT (ASX: DGT) fell 9.3% on a deeper $100.8 million loss, and Peter Warren Automotive Holdings Limited (ASX: PWR) slumped 8.9% on a profit warning. TPG Telecom Limited (ASX: TPG) rose 7.9% on mobile share gains, while Super Retail Group Limited (ASX: SUL) fell 7.6% on three broker downgrades.

Wall Street rebounds on strong US economic data

US stocks closed higher on Friday, pausing the week’s losses after data showed US business activity growing at its fastest pace in more than four years. The S&P 500 gained 0.4%, the Nasdaq 100 rose 0.3% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 518 points, while investors continued to weigh a recent surge in bond yields driven by inflation and fiscal concerns. Hyperscalers advanced, with Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) up 1.1%, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) adding 0.4% and Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META) rising 0.8%, while chipmakers were mixed — NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) fell 1%, Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MU) lost 0.8% and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) retreated 2.2%.
