Optimism and confidence in the Australian job market is growing and expanding throughout the country, with the latest data from the Regional Australia Institute showing that there were 84,600 regional job vacancies in April 2022, up 24.8% compared to a year earlier.

The unemployment rate remained steady at a historical record low, at 3.9%. Adding to the positive news this week was a slight improvement in US inflation figures: the inflation figure for April showed that prices had increased by 8.3% compared to April 2021, down from the 8.5% increase posted in March 2022. The message here is that price rises are slowing in the US, despite inflation being close to a 40-year high. The core-price index, which excludes the volatile categories of food and energy, was up 0.6% on the month, up from March’s 0.3% gain.
