Daily Market Update: 06 August 2026
Technology and mining rally lifts the ASX to a record high
The Australian sharemarket closed at a record high on Wednesday as hopes for an imminent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz overpowered a sell-off in bank and energy stocks. The S&P/ASX 200 added 82 points to close at 9227.80, fuelled by a rally in technology and mining stocks. Five of the 11 sectors were lower, led by a downturn in financials and energy. Technology and materials stocks rallied 2.5 per cent and 3.6 per cent respectively, with WiseTech Global Limited (ASX: WTC) adding 5.4 per cent to close at $39.9 and Life360 Inc (ASX: 360) climbing 3.8 per cent to $29.5. BHP Group Limited (ASX: BHP) gained 3.3 per cent after awarding a $200 million car dumper contract to Monadelphous Group Limited (ASX: MND).
Energy and bank stocks weigh on the market despite gains elsewhere
Energy stocks continued to bear the brunt of the unwind from geopolitical jitters, with the sector falling 2.2 per cent as oil prices slid. Woodside Energy Group Limited (ASX: WDS) shed 3.6 per cent to $31.8 and Santos Limited (ASX: STO) fell 2 per cent to $7.60. The financials sector fell 0.4 per cent, recovering from a larger intraday fall of 1 per cent as bank stocks steadied. Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX: CBA) dropped 1.4 per cent to $178.2, while Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ASX: ANZ), National Australia Bank Limited (ASX: NAB) and Westpac Banking Corporation (ASX: WBC) all fell less than 1 per cent. Macquarie Group Limited (ASX: MQG) was a bright spot, adding 1.5 per cent to $267. Among individual movers, Neuren Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: NEU) jumped 16.3 per cent to $21.64, Pinnacle Investment Management Group Limited (ASX: PNI) rose 8.4 per cent to $19.30 on record funds under management, and Light & Wonder Inc (ASX: LNW) rose 4 per cent to $118 on better-than-expected quarterly earnings.
Wall Street sets records as artificial intelligence optimism drives gains
Wall Street was mixed overnight, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaching a record close on news of a possible interim peace deal between the US and Iran, alongside a robust quarterly earnings season. In regular trading, the Dow rose 263.24 points, or 0.5 per cent, for a record close and its fifth positive day in a row, while the S&P 500 pulled back 0.2 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite (INDEXNASDAQ: IXIC) dropped 0.83 per cent. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index surged 6.6 per cent amid renewed optimism in the artificial intelligence trade, with NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) rallying more than 3 per cent, though tech stocks later pared gains as investors took profits and shares of Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ: AMD) and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL) struggled.
