Tech and banks lift the ASX to a four-month high

The Australian sharemarket climbed to its highest level since March, powered by technology stocks and the big four banks after US President Donald Trump helped ease Middle East tensions. The S&P/ASX 200 Index jumped 126.50 points, or 1.4 per cent, to 9145.80 on Tuesday, with 10 of 11 sectors higher. Technology was the standout, rising nearly 4 per cent for a seventh-straight session of gains, led by WiseTech Global Limited (ASX: WTC) and Xero Limited (ASX: XRO), while Life360 Inc (ASX: 360) rocketed 11.4 per cent to $28.47. Banks were well bid ahead of earnings, with Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX: CBA) up 1.6 per cent to $180.72, National Australia Bank Limited (ASX: NAB) up 3 per cent to $42.85 and Macquarie Group Limited (ASX: MQG) up 3.1 per cent to $263.19. Energy and resources also gained, though BHP Group Limited (ASX: BHP) eased 0.3 per cent after Pilbara union talks failed.

Drone maker and property trusts headline company news

DroneShield Limited (ASX: DRO) rose 14.6 per cent to $2.08 after JPMorgan lifted its holding. Charter Hall Social Infrastructure REIT (ASX: CQE) jumped 8.6 per cent on a 27.5 per cent profit rise, while Maas Group Holdings Limited (ASX: MGH) climbed 8.1 per cent after tipping a further $300 million into data centre developer Firmus and lifting full-year guidance. Credit Corp Group Limited (ASX: CCP) fell 7 per cent to $12.79 on doubts its US debt-buying earnings could be sustained.

Wall Street records fall as tech and chip stocks surge

US stocks closed sharply higher on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average reaching fresh record highs, supported by strong corporate earnings, lower oil prices and optimism the US and Iran could reach a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The S&P 500 rose 1.8 per cent to 7,737, the Dow gained 907 points to 54,086, and the Nasdaq 100 jumped 3.3 per cent. Palantir Technologies Inc (NASDAQ: PLTR) soared 29 per cent, its strongest daily gain in more than two years, after blowout second-quarter results. Semiconductors also rallied, led by Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) up 10.8 per cent, Marvell Technology Inc (NASDAQ: MRVL) up 13 per cent, Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ: MU) up 7.6 per cent and Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ: AVGO) up 6.6 per cent, while Caterpillar Inc (NYSE: CAT) climbed 5.5 per cent after better-than-expected earnings and raised revenue guidance.
