Market extends losses

S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) fell 0.3 per cent to 8687 on Wednesday, marking its seventh straight decline, as investors positioned for a likely Reserve Bank of Australia rate rise next week after inflation remained above target. Healthcare and materials dragged the market lower, with CSL Limited (ASX: CSL) down 2.4 per cent, Cochlear Limited (ASX: COH) falling 3.2 per cent, Newmont Corporation (ASX: NEM) losing 3.2 per cent and Ora Banda Mining Limited (ASX: OBM) declining 4.1 per cent, while major banks including Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX: CBA), National Australia Bank Limited (ASX: NAB) and Westpac Banking Corporation (ASX: WBC) also weakened.

Energy offsets pressure

Utilities and energy helped limit broader losses, with Origin Energy Limited (ASX: ORG) rebounding 3.2 per cent, Santos Limited (ASX: STO) rising 0.4 per cent, Ampol Limited (ASX: ALD) adding 0.9 per cent and Woodside Energy Group Limited (ASX: WDS) gaining 2 per cent after flagging stronger liquefied natural gas pricing. In corporate news, Codan Limited (ASX: CDA) surged 15.5 per cent after upgrading earnings guidance, oOh!media Limited (ASX: OML) jumped 32.9 per cent on a takeover offer from Pacific Equity Partners, G8 Education Limited (ASX: GEM) plunged 31.3 per cent after suspending operations at about 40 centres, and IGO Limited (ASX: IGO) rose 1.1 per cent despite its chief financial officer resigning after 29 days.

Global markets mixed

United States equities closed mixed after the Federal Reserve left rates unchanged, with the S&P 500 Index (NYSE: SPX) flat, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE: DJI) down 0.5 per cent and the Nasdaq 100 Index (NASDAQ: NDX) up 0.5 per cent as technology outperformed. Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) rose 8 per cent and AbbVie Inc. (NYSE: ABBV) gained 3 per cent on strong results, while Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) initially advanced 4 per cent before easing after hours, Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) climbed more than 3 per cent on cloud and artificial intelligence strength, Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) was flat after hours despite beating earnings expectations, and Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ: META) fell 7 per cent on concerns over rising artificial intelligence capital expenditure.
